[ In a solidarity activity, the students of the 12º E/F classes and their English teacher, Manuela Grazina, visited last Tuesday, April 24th of 2018, the Centro de Bem-Estar Social Senhora de Fátima institution in Olhão and donated a diverse quantity of school supplies. This institution kindly opened their doors to welcome them. ]

Initially as an act exclusively originated by the Catholic church this institution was conceived to approach and protect girls from a very young age to their 21 years old (being it the limit age to remain in this center), whose development in their domestic environments didn’t provide any closure nor any signs of safety for their personal and future growth, and fortunately, those are the values that this institution and the people who volunteer to assist these girls still proceed to defend to this day. With this said, we believe it’s also worth to notify that besides the feeling of cooperation, 100% of commitment is needed to help this cause in a wider range, since the existence of countless traumas in the lives of many girls who live in this establishment makes this action much more complex and hard to cope with.

On another note, besides the help of the Social Security (the main provider of the salary of those you work there, the girls’ tuition, clothing and the institution own expenses such as gas, electricity and water), a huge part of this financial help seems insufficient to suppress these outlays. This is why it turns out to be crucial to plea for external and individual help from those who can afford to donate daily goods, from clothing, shoe wearing, cleaning products and daily needs, to school supplies.

With this visit we got to know and understand a little bit more about the accommodations that are provided and about the way these girls live here. We got to know that, being 30 the limit number of capacity to shelter these girls and because there a lot more requests from different places given by the Social Security, it is necessary the existence of a "filtering" process, which assesses each individual case to determine if the girl will be sent to this institution or not.

According to the care that is here provided, we can consider that this Center is way more than a simple, 4-wall building. It possesses its own soul and the love from the various hearts that dedicate and invest their work on it. Besides the various difficulties, the compassion, the educational support and the socio and familiar bonding that these accommodations provide may change everything, including the future and life of the girls who live here.

It’s a fact that in the end we all "look for love, care, understanding, respect, protection, what can we say... affection!"
